Clairefontaine Pastel Mat paper offers pastel artists a unique surface for drawing that grabs pastels more effectively than Ingres papers, but is less abrasive than sanded papers. With it's strong, velvety surface Pastelmat paper is beautiful to draw on and it's texture grabs onto the pastel, breaking up the pigment and pulls it deep into the surface for exceptionally vibrant colour.

Layering and blending is a breeze and remarkable effects can be achieved even when layering multiple colours. To completely erase the pastel use a melamine foam sponge or spray compressed air to remove the pastel. And it supports the use of foam and sponge applicators to apply pastel pigments. 

Made with cellulose plant fibres it's a great acid-free, neutral pH, non-toxic option for artist as the surface produces relatively little dust so that such precautions usually taken when working on traditional papers are not necessary. 

Clairefontaine Pastelmat can be used with pastels and a variety of media and the surface consumes pastel sticks at a 30% slower rate than sanded papers. It's also great for fine line artwork so pastel pencils can easily be used. It's also suitable for water or solvent based washes allowing pastel artist to create underpaintings with solutions of denatured alcohol or other solvents which they can build layers on top of. Use with wet or dry media including soft, medium and hard pastels, PanPastels, oil pastels, charcoal, coloured pencils, acrylics, watercolour and gouache.
