Matisse MM10 Gesso 1L White

Matisse's Gesso Medium is a great surface preparation for canvas, boards and even paper. It has an excellent tooth for easy paint manipulation and is an intense white colour. it can be thinned with water as it's water-based and artists can use equal parts Matisse MM10 Gesso and water when working on raw canvas or linen. It also tightens the canvas creating a firmer finish. 

Although it's water-based Matisse MM10 Gesso is a suitable surface for painting with both acrylic and oil paints. When used for acrylic paints two coats of gesso are recommended to ensure complete, even coverage of your surface. And for use with oil paints it's advisable to seal the surface first with Matisse MM5 Matt Medium or MM12 Clear Sealer, and then apply a minimum of 3 coats of gesso. As the oil in oil paints is readily absorbed by the gesso, a stronger sealed layer is needed to ensure the paint does not absorb through the gesso and onto the actual canvas. Matisse Gessoes contain Calcite grounds (calcium carbonate) which help to protect canvas from destructive gases given off by oil paints over their life-span.

To apply the Matisse MM10 Gesso to your surface use a spatula or blade. When using a thin down the Gesso as above, especially for the first few coats. The way the gesso is applied can also affect the tooth or finish. If you prefer a textured or rough tooth use bristle hog hair brushes. And for a smoother finish soft synthetic wide brushes are recommended. The gesso can also be sanded with a moist fine wet/dry sandpaper once dry after each application. Applying moisture to the sandpaper reduces the amount of dusr created. Each coat can take 1-3 hours to dry depending on the weather and inside conditions.
